Blue Jays Week 2 Update

After today's game, the Jays sit at 5-7.  Probably not the 12-0 that the fans were hoping for.  The starting pitching has been pretty good, and if they were going to falter it might have been there.  Only R.A. Dickey has yet to figure it out, and he usually takes about 2 months to do that, so they're right on course.  The bullpen has been just ok.  Osuna has been lights out as the closer, but pretty much everyone else has struggled at times with the exception of Rule 5 pick Joe Biagini.

The offence has been the problem so far.  That's the one thing that for sure was going to carry this team.  The big 3 in Donaldson, Bautista and Encarnacion have had decent if not great starts, but the rest of the offence has been prodigiously bad.  The Jays offence minus the big 3 his hitting an unprofessional .168 over 256 at bats.  To put that in perspective, it doesn't even reach the lowest of major league standards, and someone with that batting average over a sample size that large should be demoted to AAA immediately.  Of course it's not just one guy, so nobody will lose their job.  It's only 12 games, but if you're wondering why they're sub .500, look no further.  Let's hope the week 3 update is a better one.

In other news
- Marco Estrada came of the DL and pitched a shutout over 7 innings in his return.  Lucky for Biagini and Leon, newly acquired Franklin Morales was ready to go on the DL so nobody lost their job for the moment.

-Moments later they decided to call up a lefty.  Pat Venditte who's claim to fame is being able to pitch right and left handed was added mainly as a lefty to this bullpen.  He's looked decent in a couple of appearances so far.  The switch pitching is a fun little thing to watch.  Arnold Leon was designated for assignment

-Last post I was worried about a Josh Donaldson injury, but he didn't miss any time.  He had to DH for 3 games which meant Darwin Barney played third and Encarnacion played first.  Justin Smoak and Chris Colabello had to ride some extra pines during this time, but neither of them are hitting over .100 at the moment so no great loss.

-The Smoakabello breakout years of last year and the early slumps of this year will be interesting to watch.  If they both have down years, it might really be wise to start putting some money together for Encarnacion for when he hits free agency.
