Braves land 5 prospects in MLBs top 100 for 2016

The praise continues to roll in for the Braves freshly re stocked farm system, with grabbing 5 of the top 100 spots on MLBs ranking system.  They range from Dansby Swanson (8) to Kolby Allard (83), almost all of them acquired since the 2014 offseason.  Let's take a brief overview of each of the selected prospects:

Dansby Swanson (8) - Described by some scouts as a "five tool player without a weakness in any tool", Swanson was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Shelby Miller deal.  The Vanderbilt graduate boasts soft hands in the field, plus contact and plus power, with speed to boot.  He checks all the boxes as a player that a team could build around, and while he's slotted as a short stop, he played the keystone at Vanderbilt, and with Ozzie Albies (more on him in a bit) coming up shortly behind him, he seems like a candidate that could end up at 2nd at some point.

Sean Newcomb (21) - The centerpiece in the trade that sent Andrelton Simmons to Anaheim, the common thread in every scouting report out there on Newcomb is his ability to bring hard velocity and bite to his pitches (fastball in mid 90's, touching triple digits) with minimal "effort" from the left side.  This bodes well for durability and control, although the latter has escaped him in his early starts.  Mechanically, he has a sound windup that and delivery that shouldn't be too difficult to repeat, so the control will come with more experience.  David O'Brien of the AJC has said there's "Bon a Fide Ace Potential" there, while the lowest ceiling projection has him as a mid-rotation workhorse.

Ozzie Albies (29) - The "other" short stop that made the cut, Albies is pretty much all that remains from the "Pre-Hart" era of the Braves farm system.  Only 19 years old, he already has shown excellent contact, speed, and defense at high A Rome.  His left-to-right movement indicates that between him and (Dansby) Swanson, Albies would likely be the better defensive short stop, however there is plenty of time to sort that out, given the Ozzie's extreme youth.  His swing wont produce much power, but his speed and contact ability will be his main tools.  Atlanta hasn't had a true leadoff hitter since Michael Bourn, and in a couple of years, this young man could be the one to take that mantle.

Aaron Blair (56) - Blair will undoubtedly be the first of the crop to don the "Atlanta" on his uniform, as he has little to prove in the minors.  The other component of the Shelby Miller deal, Blair has shown three above average pitches, and pitch deep into games by not making too many mistakes.  He is shaping up to be a solid middle rotation starter, with a basement of a back end innings eater.  His fast pace on the mound and low walks total shows shades of Tim Hudson, however with some experience, it's not hard to see him working hitters and piling up strikeouts.

Kolby Allard (89) - With Allard, you see a prospect that is pretty much all projections, as back surgery has severely limited his production to the point of only 6 innings in professional ball so far.  That seems to be enough, however, for MLB to give him a spot on this elite list.  Boasting a fastball with life, what has been described as "plus" breaking pitches, and a powerful delivery, Allard simply needs to prove he can stay on the mound, and he will soar into the upper parts of this list in a short amount of time. I did a brief write up on Newcomb and Allard, who both made the top 10 LHP list earlier this year.

Overall, the only thing Braves fans can do is watch and wait.... and hope, really, because prospects are exactly that, prospects.  Some work out, some do not, it's simply too early to tell, however, given the quality and quantity of the players that are populating the farm system of the Atlanta Braves organization, there's plenty of optimism to go around..

Texas Rangers place 5 prospects on the top 100 list

The Rangers even with dealing away many prospects in the Cole Hamels deal, still have plenty of hope. As they have placed 5 prospects in the top 100 list, and 4 of them are in the top 50. MLBPipeline.com placed RHP Luis Ortiz (No. 73), 2015 1st round pick RHP Dillon Tate (No. 36), OF Nomar Mazara (No. 18), OF Lewis Brinson (No. 16), and 3B Joey Gallo (No. 9). The future certainly is bright for the Rangers.

D-Backs aquire Jean Segura

On what seemed to be an awkward trade on a Saturday afternoon. The D-Backs have aquired SS Jean Segura and RHP Tyler Wagner from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Chase Anderson, INF Aaron Hill, SS Isan Diaz and cash considerations. The D-Backs have solidified there offense at short stop for a couple years and maybe even longer. With the Dodgers in there division, the D-Backs needed to strengthen up their team. The Brewers have young SS Orlando Arcia already making his way up to the majors, so it makes a little sense that they moved Segura out of his way. After losing Swanson to the Braves this off season, the D-Backs move seems like it's to cover for their loss. We'll see if this trade pays off this season.

Dodgers resign Kendrick

Howie Kendrick is returning the Dodgers. After turning down a qualifying offer in the offseason, Kendrick has reportedly signed a 2 year, $20mil deal with LA. The second baseman came to the Dodgers in a trade with the Angels before the 2015 season. The Dodgers also resigned second baseman Chase Utley to a one year, $7mil deal. Kiké Hernandez also figures to get time at second base, and as a back up to third baseman Justin Turner, who had knee surgery in the offseason.

Do the Cubs need Dexter Fowler?

Earlier this week, we read that both Chicago teams are interested in Dexter Fowler.  It was also reported by Bruce Levine that he is "most likely" going to end up on the Cubs. Cub fans want to see Fowler back in a Cubs uniform, but the only issue with that brings is do the Cubs really need Dexter Fowler?

In 2015, Fowler hit .250 in 156 games (the most he has ever played in a season). He had career highs in many stats, including home runs (17).

After Fowler denied $15.8 million dollars from the Cubs back in November, the Cubs began a search for an outfielder. Low and behold, they got extremely lucky. Jason Heyward decided to sign with the Cubs under a monster contract. It filled the Cubs' outfield vacancy.

Now, sitting in late January, Fowler still has yet to sign with a team. With no need for Fowler, many MLB sources are saying that the Cubs are most likely to sign Fowler. If they do, Fowler will only work in a back-up role and he will play in singnificantly less game than he did last season.

If you asked me, I want Fowler back and I don't want Fowler back. I respect him as a ball player, I also think he can do better than a back-up role. Again, if they do sign him, it will take a long time for Fowler to get used to not playing on a day to day basis, but I'm sure he'd love the World Series ring, wouldn't we all?

Evaluating Ozuna

Corey Dickerson was traded from the Colorado Rockies to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday....and the main player that the Rockies got in return was a relief pitcher (albeit a good one). The talk around baseball for the last week or so centered around the Rockies having (4) OF's that batted LH. There's been talk all winter long about how the Rockies "Need Pitching", but most of that chatter was about "Starting Pitching" not the bullpen. I don't claim to understand anything about the Rockies methodology here, but that's OK, since I'm writing about the Miami Marlins!.....LOL

Now I'm not going to comment on my opinion of which side probably "got the better deal" in that trade, but I will tie it into a situation that the Marlins should pay attention to. It seems that the Corey Dickerson trade to the Rays has raised a question about what the future holds for Marcel Ozuna as a part of the Marlins. The Marlins are keeping Ozuna for now (apparently), so we'll look at the Dickerson trade, compare & contrast the players performances, and see how it affects Ozuna's value for the Marlins, as they attempt to handicap the return that could be expected for him in a trade later this season.

The difference in the two players at the plate favors Dickerson in regard to BA and raw power. The kid can flat out Mash a baseball. If you look, their 2014 seasons look very similar on the scorecard. But Ozuna is no slouch when it comes to the bat. However, what doesn't show on the scorecard is the significant difference between the two defensively. Ozuna is FAR better in the OF than Dickerson (who happens to have a "rag-arm" by the way). Rockies loved his stick, but couldn't live with his glove/arm. They considered moving him to 1B this season to solve that problem, but apparently, that didn't go well either. He'll and up being a DH on the Rays, with an occasional start in the OF. Ozuna, on the other hand, plays very good defense, and makes good use of his speed and strong arm.

With the focus these days shifting towards defensive abilities (Jason Heyward signing), Teams seem to be willing to spend more on defense than they used to. That premise alone, combined with (potentially) a productive 1st half by Ozuna, should clearly net the Marlins a much better return than the Rockies got for Dickerson.

I haven't ever believed that the Marlins could get a #1 starter for Ozuna (I guess that's what they said they wanted). But getting a solid #3 shouldn't be out of the question, if Ozuna can prove that his 2014 was his floor, not a fluke. He's got miles of upside, and someone should be willing to pay for that.

Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles need to keep adding players . They need an OF, SP, or a DH .... Last time I checked the Orioles have been contacting camps of Pedro Alveraz, Dexter fowler, Austin Jackson, Alfredo Simon , Cliff Lee, kyle loche, Gallorado, Ian Desmond , and finally jerimie Gutheri .

Dexter fowler, and starting pitcher Gallorado and starting pitcher jerimie Gutheri all have draft picks that a team would have to give up to aquire them .. Reports saying that the Orioles are afraid to do that. Talked to Jim duquette : he says that if it's the right guy for the team that the oriole would not be afraid ..

Pedro alveraz would be a nice cheap option for the Orioles . ... The Orioles would have to trade JJ Hardy to aquire Ian Desmond . Talked to some sources and the Orioles have not ruled that out .

Austin Jackson would be a nice option for the Orioles . He's a little past his prime but would be a nice guy for the Orioles to get ..

I'm Alec with your sports report ...

Copollela: Braves "Ready to head to Orlando..."

In a recent Q&A between MLBs Mark Bowman and Atlanta Braves GM Jon Copollela, Bowman asked the newly official General Manager if the organization had any further moves planned before the start of spring training.  He responded:

The answer to that question is more a function of what we are offered than it is our desire to make more significant moves. It feels like we are ready to head to Orlando, but if somebody blows us away with an unbelievable opportunity, like with the Simmons and Miller trades, we have to consider it. I consider John Schuerholz the greatest GM of all time, and 14 straight division titles may never happen again, and those teams on average had 10 new players each season. It's like the one-liner from one of my favorite movies: "We're like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open."

First of all, points for the Boondock Saints reference, Coppy.  What Braves fans can take away from this, is that the 2016 roster is pretty much set, and that the rebuilding process has now moved to the development phase.  Given the "hyperinflation" (his word) in the free agent market, all indicators are pointing to the organization staying the course that they undertook in the 2014 off season, building a winner from within, with minimal help from free agency.  One has to give the organization credit, they have accomplished exactly what they set out to do from day one in terms of getting the pieces in place, now they just have to pan out.  That's the easy part, right?

Rockies Designate Christian Friedrich for Assignment

FEBRUARY 5: As our JC Carrillo writes, Friedrich has been claimed by the Angels.

JANUARY 28: In light of the trade that happened Thursday sending Rockies LF Corey Dickerson to Tampa Bay, Colorado announced that they have designated lefty reliever Christian Friedrich for assignment. As MLBTR notes, Colorado acquired two 40-man players and had to clear space for one of Jake McGee or German Marquez.

Friedrich, 28, was selected 25th overall in the 2008 draft by the Rockies but has struggled much of his pro career. In 68 games in 2015, Christian went 0-4 with a 5.25 ERA and 45 strikeouts out of Colorado's 'pen. In three seasons with the Rox, Friedrich has a 5-16 record with an ERA of 5.81 and 146 strikeouts in 100 games, including 19 starts. If this does indeed spell the end for Friedrich in Colorado, it sounds like a change of scenery would be good for the southpaw.

Mets shopping Carlos Torres

The Mets are in constant trade talks with multiple teams inquiring on Carlos Torres Pitcher. Now that the Mets have Yoenis Cespedes, they have depth to deal torres for other needs and assets. He has been recently DFA, so Mets are willing to let him go. I can see the Angels, Giants, Athletics, even Astros going after him. Stay tuned something could happen in a day or two.

Rockies Trade Dickerson to Tampa Bay for McGee

The Rockies and Rays agreed to a trade Thursday that will send LF Corey Dickerson and 3B prospect Kevin Padlo to Tampa Bay in exchange for LHP Jake McGee and minor league RHP German Marquez. This trade seemingly puts an end to all the speculation that Colorado would trade one of their OFs, especially after signing Gerardo Parra earlier this month.

Dickerson, 26, has battled injuries so far in his MLB career, which has all came with the Rockies. He was drafted in the 8th round of the 2010 draft by Colorado and made his debut June 22, 2013. Last year, he slashed .304/.333/.536 with 10 HR and 31 RBI in only 65 games, missing a majority of those games due to plantar fasciitis that flared up in LA in June. He then broke a rib in August attempting to make a diving catch in St. Louis. In 265 games with Colorado, Corey owns a .299/.345/.534 slash line with 39 HR and 124 RBI.

McGee, 29, is a hard-throwing lefty that will likely slide into the setup role behind closer Adam Ottavino. In 39 games in 2015, Jake pitched to the tune of a 1-2 record with a 2.41 ERA & 48 strikeouts. He did miss some time with a left knee injury, but has been pretty durable the last 4 seasons, appearing in 252 games over that span. In his career, he has gone 21-11 with a 2.77 ERA, 319 strikeouts, and also saved 19 games in 2014.

Dexter Fowler back to the Cubs?

Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago is reporting that the Cubs AND White Sox are interested in Dexter Fowler. A baseball executive told Levine that Fowler has a better chance of going to the Cubs.

This is a developing story. Follow @ChiCubsUpdates on Twitter for the latest updates. This post will be updated as more information become available.

Angels made a trade with Tigers for Jefry Marte

Angels have traded 2B Kody Eaves to the Tigers for IF Jefry Marte. Angels designated IF Ronald Torreyes to make space in the 40-man roster.

Angels, Tigers agree to a trade

The Angels and Tigers agree to a trade. Angels will receive INF Jefry Marte, and the Tigers receive INF Kody Eaves. It was a infielder swap for both teams.

Pitching Decisions

With Bronson Arroyo officially "Off The Market" after signing a minor league deal with the Nationals, the Marlins find themselves running out of quality options if they want to add another SP before the season starts.

They've looked at a multitude of options so far, including Gallardo, Lohse, Simon, Fister, and Harang.....none of which I consider to be better than what they already have in house. I happen to like Adam Conley better than any of those, especially when you consider the cost of each.

The latest parade of pitchers to march across the stage for the Marlins includes Tim Lincecum, Cliff Lee, and possibly their old buddy Mat Latos. Lincecum is scheduling a work out during Spring Training, and the Marlins will be there to take a look. Cliff Lee is supposed to do the same, but had just recently stated that he may not be able to pitch in 2016. Hopefully, the Marlins' statement that they "will back off if there's an injury risk", will ring true.......IF one exists. I'd love to see a healthy Cliff Lee in a Marlins uniform.

They do have Justin Nicolino and Jose Urena in the minors, and they both have had a "cup of coffee" in the Bigs last year, so it's possible that they get a call after a month or two, if the other guys don't pan out.

They still could use a bullpen arm to solidify the middle innings, but the rest of the roster seems pretty well set.

There's 22 Days left before Pitchers & Catchers report to Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.......Hopefully they will have it all figured out prior to that date.

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome below.

Interview With New York Mets Prospect PJ Conlon

This past weekend I had the privilege of interviewing New York Mets prospect PJ Conlon.  Drafted in the 13th round of the 2015 MLB draft, Conlon posted stellar numbers with the Brooklyn Cyclones.  In 17 appearances, Conlon pitched 17.0 innings, with 25 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.00.  Conlon will continue to dominate hitters in 2016.

Q 1) What has been your favourite part of the offseason so far?

A: I would say my favorite part has been the opportunity to completely focus on baseball 100%. I've been able to devote all my time to getting myself stronger and in shape without having to worry about school and classes or things like that so I'm excited to see how things have paid off when I show up to spring training.

Q 2) Explain what it was like being drafted by the New York Mets?

A: It was a feeling that I'll never forget. It was just a tremendous honor. It's hard to describe because it was a dream come true. I remember just sitting at my computer pretty sure that the Mets were going to be the team and when I finally heard my name I just laid back for a second and took a sigh of relief knowing that my hard work was paying off and this was the start of a whole new journey I had been dreaming of since I was 5 years old.

Q 3) Is there a player in baseball who you look up to?

A: Currently in the MLB from a pitching stand point I would have to say David Price. Just his dominance is fun to watch. From a personal standpoint I definitely look up to Marcus Stroman because I too am on the short side of what people think pitchers should be and he's set out to prove to people that those type of things don't matter and I relate to that as well.

Q 4) What was your favorite part about playing for the Brooklyn Cyclones?

A: My favorite part had to be all the fan support out there. They showed up to every game and were always very kind and supportive to all of us players so they definitely made it a pleasure to be able to play in Brooklyn. The fans made it a lot of fun to show up to the stadium everyday.

Q 5) After such a dominant 2015 season, what are your goals heading into the upcoming season?

A: I try to stay away from result oriented goals such as things like ERA and numbers like that because that kind of thinking a lot of the time turns out to work against you. So what I'm just trying to do for this upcoming season is stay healthy, be a good teammate, throw strikes, and keep a positive attitude and the rest will take care of itself.

Angels avoid arbitration with Kole Calhoun

LA Times and Angels beat writer Mike DiGiovanna is reporting that #Angels and Kole Calhoun have agreed to terms on a $3.4 million deal, avoiding arbitration.

Bronson Arroyo signs with the Nationals

Bronson Arroyo has signed with the Nationals. It was reported earlier today that he was close to signing. Nationals rotation has just got stronger from the addition of a veteran.

A Look Around the Cardinal Infield

Around the Horn

The Cardinals infield doesn't get as much credit as it should. We all love Matt Carpenter and he gets the recognition that he deserves, but I feel the rest of the group doesn't get as much love.

1B
Although it is early and spring training hasn't started yet, it appears that Brandon Moss will be getting the nod at first base, at least to begin the season. A large amount of Cardinal nation was very disappointed in the Moss trade late year and he didn't do very much with the rest of the season to dissuade the doubts that many people had. Moss, however, was dealing with a healing hip after having surgery last off-season. I believe that a healthy Moss will return more to form this season. His ZIPs projections for this season aren't what I anticipate from him.

AVG   OBP   SLG    HR    OPS+   WAR
.237   .319   .444    21     108      1.2

These seem like very modest projections as Moss averaged a SLG% of .518 and an OPS+ of 139 in the three seasons prior to the hip injury. I feel like a healthy hip will lead to a return to form. I see a potential comeback player of the year in Moss.

2B
If there is any player with the most breakout potential this season it's Kolten Wong. His strikeout percentage was too high last year and his OBP needs to improve, especially if he wants to bat leadoff, as he has expressed a desire to. I don't believe he is a good fit as a leadoff hitter even if his OBP improves. I do, however, expect him to vastly outpace his projections this year.

AVG   OBP    SLG    HR   OPS+  WAR
.261   .313    .389    11     92       2.4

I feel that a 92 OPS+ seems extremely low for him as that's saying he will be a below league average hitter. I think he will make the next step this season and truly stand out offensively as well as continuing to make spectacular plays at the keystone.

SS
Good old Jhonny. Peralta was a tale of two halves, much like Wong, last year. Both Jhonny and Kolten had amazing first halves and then the grind of the season seemed to get the best of them as fatigue led to a dramatic drop off offensively for both after the all-star break. This problem will hopefully be addressed with the addition of Gyorko, as he will be able to effectively spell both throughout the season. Peralta has been a streaky player throughout his career but I expect another strong season from him. ZIPs projects a season more in line with the second half of 2015.

AVG   OBP   SLG    HR   OPS+  WAR
.261   .322   .404    14      99       2.6

Only time will tell which Peralta we will see. His OPS+ has averaged 109 over the last 5 seasons. His WAR is up and down throughout his career as he had a 5.7 WAR in 2014 and then dropped to 1.8 last year. Which Jhonny will we see?

3B
Matt Carpenter. That's all that really needs to be said. The guy can flat out rake. He gets on base better than anyone on the team and last year showed his incredible power potential. His projections are interesting, considering the season he had last year. ZIPs appears to have taken an average over his last three seasons and went with the result. Though they underestimate his power in my opinion. There isn't a clear consensus on what kind of hitter Marp is. Regardless of if he is the high power hitter from 2015 or the walk machine of 2014, it's clear that he will be the guy who leads the lineup.

AVG   OBP   SLG    HR   OPS+  WAR
.272   .362   .442    16    120      3.8

No matter which Marp we get it's going to be a lot of fun to watch. The man should batting leadoff even with his power. Last season the phrase “As he goes, so go the Cardinals” could not be more true. He set the pace for the lineup and I want him taking the most at bats on the team.

In short, I'm a big fan of the overall potential of our very solid infield. Add in Gyorko adding 15+ home runs off the bench, while giving the whole infield much needed time off and I believe the entire group can outpace their projections.

Rockies, Charlie Blackmon Avoid Arbitration

The Rockies announced Monday that they have avoided arbitration with CF Charlie Blackmon, agreeing to a one-year, $3.5MM deal. As MLB Trade Rumors notes, Colorado filed at $2.7MM versus Blackmon's $3.9MM.

"Chuck Nazty" slashed .287/.347/.450 with 17 HR and 58 RBI in 157 games in 2015 and swiped 43 bases along the way. Charlie had a breakout year in 2014 highlighted by an All-Star appearance, which cemented him as Colorado's everyday CF. Blackmon's name has come up in trade talks this winter (as have every one of the Rockies' OF), but it looks like LF Corey Dickerson is the one most likely to be traded out of Dickerson, Blackmon, and RF Carlos Gonzalez.

Bronson Arroyo close to signing

With Arroyo having plenty of suitors for his services. It's almost a guarantee we will be seeing him in the majors once again very soon. Reports are from my source that he is close to signing soon. He has interest from the Reds, Nationals, Padres, Pirates, and Marlins. From what we know, Most of those teams could use a extra arm in there rotation. To have Arroyo's presence as a veteran is for sure to help a team out. Stay tuned and I will keep you updated once he signs.

Angels Rank in 27th on USA Today Ranking.

I just finished reading USA Today Sports article
" All 30 MLB teams' starting rotations, ranked ".
The #Angels are ranked in 27th. That's BAD! This is what the article said about the Angels ranking in 27th.

" This seems bad: The Angels have, in Mike Trout, a guy who might very well prove to be one of the sport’s all-time greats, at a cost that’s a total steal given his production. But they’ll run him out behind a starting rotation that appears totally meh: Garrett Richards, their best, is pretty good, and none of the four guys slated for behind him look likely to be horrible. But front to back, the Angels’ rotation just doesn’t stack up to those of other hopeful contenders. "

Arte Moreno doesn't want to rebuild, he wants to win now. But he doesn't want to open his wallet. There's times that I feel that Arte Moreno is Al Davis of baseball. What's your thoughts for the future of the Angels this season.

Royals looking to restructure Salvador Perez's contract

The catcher is due for a decent pay in 2016, making 7 mill. Now, my opinion?  Is that he's worth it, it's hard to find a decent if not great catcher these days. Even though Perez had a down year, doesn't mean his pay should be dropped a little. His presence alone brings energy to the Royals and his leadership. So my question to you is, Do you guys think he is worth the money or do you restructure his contract?

Ever since I started Everything MLB Inc. back in October 2012, I envisioned a big, successful sports site where people and fans could get everything they needed from baseball. I tried to get this goal accomplished on my own by hiring two different writing staffs down through the years, as well as completely managing the site on my own. But unfortunately, all of the writers moved on to bigger and better things and I was left to try and rebuild on my own. I had almost given up. I even tried selling or giving away the website at one point, but then I thought of a new solution! I would try and find a young, aspiring writer to come in and run the site for me as President and managing editor and try to help make my hopes and dreams for this website a reality. After over a year of searching, I finally found my man in young baseball writer Easton Leonard. He is a gifted writer and businessman who has built this one, small baseball website into an Everything sports organization. Since I hired him over a month ago we have expanded to where we now have not only baseball but also football, basketball, and hockey. We have also hired over twenty writers to help us as well. And to all the writers who write for the Everything Sports Organization, I personally welcome you to the team and hope you all enjoy your experience with us. I also hope you will stick with us and help us build something great. Thanks to our President Easton Leonard and all of our dedicated writers, my dreams for Everything MLB and the Everything Sports Org. are becoming a reality. I'm excited for the future!

Small Upgrades for the Cardinals Could Pay Off in a Big Way

Although it may not be the most exciting off season for Cardinals fans, there have been a series of moves that greatly improve the team going into the 2016 season.

1. Brayan Peña: Especially in the light of the Molina injury, a backup catcher was a must this offseason. Peña provides a reliable glove that comes with a much improved offense over Tony Cruz.

2. Jedd Gyorko: Getting a player of Gyorko's caliber under team control for multiple years for Jon Jay was surprising. Gyorko can play multiple positions and spell the entire infield a day off here or there. He provides the versatility to be a super utility player with pop off the bench. The Cardinals lacked a reliable backup infielder in 2015, which became a major issue in the 2nd half of the season. Having a weapon like Gyorko should fill a major hole from a year ago.

3. Seung Hwan Oh: Similar to the infielders, staying fresh was a huge problem for the relievers. Overuse of Seth Maness and Kevin Siegrist played an integral role in the collapse to end the season. Adding a polished veteran like Oh feasibly allows the rest of the bullpen more rest.

4. Mike Leake: Leake is a competitor, an athlete, and has the potential to be a solid number 2 or 3. It took me a while to hop on the Leake train, but he has grown on me. His addition was a must after Lynn's season ending injury. When healthy, a rotation of Wainwright-Martinez-Garcia-Wacha-Leake looks pretty awesome.

None of these names are flashy, but thats okay. Every major hole the Cardinals had in their 100 win campaign in 2015 was filled this offseason. Add an extra year of experience for the young guys like Grichuk, Piscotty, and Wong and we should see an improved team come opening day.

What To Expect From Travis d’Arnaud In 2016

In 2015, New York Mets fans got a glimpse of just how good Travis d’Arnaud can be.  Despite landing on the DL on multiple occasions, d’Arnaud was still very productive offensively, as he played a significant role in the Mets World Series run.  Barring injury in 2016, there is no doubt that the 26 year-old catcher will be among the leagues best.

Despite only appearing in 67 games, d’Arnaud batted .268, while hitting 12 homeruns and 41 RBIs.  With an on base percentage of .340, he showed signs of major improvement from the previous season.  If d’Arnaud can continue to stay patient at the plate, he can definitely be among the leagues elite this upcoming season.

A lot of d’Arnaud’s success will rely on if he can stay healthy.  With a full season behind the plate, there is no doubt that the Long Beach native can be a .280 hitter capable of hitting 20 plus homeruns.  With good power, and the ability to hit the ball all over the field, d’Arnaud will thrive offensively in 2016.  With such a dynamic offense that the Mets possess, d’Arnaud will no doubt accumulate a career high when it comes to RBIs.

Defensively is where d’Arnaud tends to struggle at times.  He doesn’t have the strongest and most accurate arm when it comes to throwing out runners.  Opposing teams were often successful when attempting to steal.  If he can improve on this, then d’Arnaud will definitely be one of National Leagues top catchers.

The sky is the limit for Travis d’Arnaud and the New York Mets in 2016.  The only thing holding him back is his inability to stay healthy.  If d’Arnaud can stay in the line up, he will be among the leagues best at his position during the upcoming season.
