This past weekend, New York Mets manager Terry Collins,
spoke with the media, and made it known that young pitchers Matt Harvey and
Jacob deGrom will have no limitations when it comes to innings pitched during
the 2016 season. Both pitchers
accumulated a career high in innings pitched in 2015.
After missing all of the 2014 season due to Tommy John
surgery, Matt Harvey had an exceptional 2015 season. In 29 starts, Harvey posted a 13-8 record
with a 2.71 ERA. What was most
encouraging bout Harvey last season, was the velocity on his fastball was not
affected, even after the surgery. Although
Harvey was pulled early from multiple starts to the dismay of many Mets fans, this
will no longer be an issue come 2016.
Another young Mets pitcher is Jacob deGrom who was also
stellar in 2015. In 30 starts, deGrom
posted a 14-8 record, with a 2.54 ERA, while appearing in his first All Star
game, where he struck out the side in just nine pitches. Despite the occasional skipped start towards
the end of the regular season, deGrom’s inning’s limit were not as widely
monitored as Harvey’s were, but were still something to keep an eye on.
As we near the start of Spring Training, the Mets starting
rotation looks to be in great shape, and should help the team contend for their
second consecutive NL East
Title. The projected
Opening Day Line-up will look like this:
1. Matt Harvey
2. Jacob deGrom
3. Noah Syndergaard
4. Steven Matz
5. Bartolo Colon
Come July, the Mets rotation will welcome back Zack Wheeler,
as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Overall, the rotation of the Mets will keep them in contention
throughout the season, and with Harvey and deGrom available to pitch a full
season with no restrictions, the sky is the limit for the 2016 Mets.
