Fishing For Pitching

So the word on the street is that the Miami Marlins are still searching for some rotation help. I guess they feel that the additions of Chen and Jackson haven't given them enough options......or are the "just fishing"?

The current rotation is: Fernandez, Chen, Cosart, Koehler, Jackson.

They are looking at guys like Alfredo Simon, Doug Fister, Kyle Lohse (really???.....Lohse???), and even Tim Lincecum. They looked at Sierra, but the Dodgers swooped in first. He appears to be a bullpen piece for them at this point, so maybe he wasn't going to fill the "need" that the feel they have. Personally, I'd rather they have a reunion (on a very inexpensive trial) with their old buddy Mat Latos. I think he has the talent (in there somewhere).....maybe they can "coach it out of him again".

Fact is, the Marlins HAVE other options. They have Adam Conley, who I think pitched very well last year, considering it was his first taste of the Bigs. They also have Phelps, who is an established starter, and had mixed results last season, but broke his forearm in August. It was a "fracture" so I'd guess that he'll be ok to start ST.

In the minors they have both Justin Nicolino and Jose Urena. Both had a cup of coffee last season, with mixed results as well, but both players should be getting ready to step into full-time roles very soon.

Let's hope they do something intelligent, although often it's difficult for the fans at home to know what's Really Going On behind the scenes. We'll know what they decide very soon.

From the Bleachers, looking in........
