The Washington Nationals have released pitcher Jonathan Papelbon. He requested a trade from the Nationals earlier today, and they granted his request.

Papelbon lost his starting role as the team's closer after they acquired Mark Melancon from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Papelbon recorded a 4.37 ERA over the season. The Nationals were going to designate him for assignment until he asked to be released instead.
