Colorado Rockies SS Jose Reyes is headed to trial for a domestic violence incident that occurred October 31 in Hawaii. Reyes, who was arrested for the incident, has pleaded not guilty. As ESPN notes, Reyes was involved in an argument with his wife that eventually turned physical. The trial is scheduled for April 4, but a plea agreement could be reached before then. If Reyes does indeed go to trial, that would conceivably make his services unavailable for some time, as the Rockies are scheduled to begin the 2016 season in Arizona on April 4. MLB continues to investigate Reyes' case to determine if further discipline is required. Under new domestic violence policy, commissioner Rob Manfred is allowed to discipline players for just cause.
Reyes, 32, was acquired at the 2015 Trade Deadline in the blockbuster deal that sent star SS Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto. In 47 games with the Rockies, Reyes slashed .259/.291./.368 with 3 HR and 19 RBI. In 116 games with Toronto and Colorado, Reyes slashed .274/.310/.378 with 7 HR and 53 RBI. Reyes is owed $56MM through 2017.
