Braves land 5 prospects in MLBs top 100 for 2016
Dansby Swanson (8) - Described by some scouts as a "five tool player without a weakness in any tool", Swanson was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Shelby Miller deal. The Vanderbilt graduate boasts soft hands in the field, plus contact and plus power, with speed to boot. He checks all the boxes as a player that a team could build around, and while he's slotted as a short stop, he played the keystone at Vanderbilt, and with Ozzie Albies (more on him in a bit) coming up shortly behind him, he seems like a candidate that could end up at 2nd at some point.
Sean Newcomb (21) - The centerpiece in the trade that sent Andrelton Simmons to Anaheim, the common thread in every scouting report out there on Newcomb is his ability to bring hard velocity and bite to his pitches (fastball in mid 90's, touching triple digits) with minimal "effort" from the left side. This bodes well for durability and control, although the latter has escaped him in his early starts. Mechanically, he has a sound windup that and delivery that shouldn't be too difficult to repeat, so the control will come with more experience. David O'Brien of the AJC has said there's "Bon a Fide Ace Potential" there, while the lowest ceiling projection has him as a mid-rotation workhorse.
Ozzie Albies (29) - The "other" short stop that made the cut, Albies is pretty much all that remains from the "Pre-Hart" era of the Braves farm system. Only 19 years old, he already has shown excellent contact, speed, and defense at high A Rome. His left-to-right movement indicates that between him and (Dansby) Swanson, Albies would likely be the better defensive short stop, however there is plenty of time to sort that out, given the Ozzie's extreme youth. His swing wont produce much power, but his speed and contact ability will be his main tools. Atlanta hasn't had a true leadoff hitter since Michael Bourn, and in a couple of years, this young man could be the one to take that mantle.
Aaron Blair (56) - Blair will undoubtedly be the first of the crop to don the "Atlanta" on his uniform, as he has little to prove in the minors. The other component of the Shelby Miller deal, Blair has shown three above average pitches, and pitch deep into games by not making too many mistakes. He is shaping up to be a solid middle rotation starter, with a basement of a back end innings eater. His fast pace on the mound and low walks total shows shades of Tim Hudson, however with some experience, it's not hard to see him working hitters and piling up strikeouts.
Kolby Allard (89) - With Allard, you see a prospect that is pretty much all projections, as back surgery has severely limited his production to the point of only 6 innings in professional ball so far. That seems to be enough, however, for MLB to give him a spot on this elite list. Boasting a fastball with life, what has been described as "plus" breaking pitches, and a powerful delivery, Allard simply needs to prove he can stay on the mound, and he will soar into the upper parts of this list in a short amount of time. I did a brief write up on Newcomb and Allard, who both made the top 10 LHP list earlier this year.
Overall, the only thing Braves fans can do is watch and wait.... and hope, really, because prospects are exactly that, prospects. Some work out, some do not, it's simply too early to tell, however, given the quality and quantity of the players that are populating the farm system of the Atlanta Braves organization, there's plenty of optimism to go around..

Do the Cubs need Dexter Fowler?
In 2015, Fowler hit .250 in 156 games (the most he has ever played in a season). He had career highs in many stats, including home runs (17).
After Fowler denied $15.8 million dollars from the Cubs back in November, the Cubs began a search for an outfielder. Low and behold, they got extremely lucky. Jason Heyward decided to sign with the Cubs under a monster contract. It filled the Cubs' outfield vacancy.
Now, sitting in late January, Fowler still has yet to sign with a team. With no need for Fowler, many MLB sources are saying that the Cubs are most likely to sign Fowler. If they do, Fowler will only work in a back-up role and he will play in singnificantly less game than he did last season.

Evaluating Ozuna
Now I'm not going to comment on my opinion of which side probably "got the better deal" in that trade, but I will tie it into a situation that the Marlins should pay attention to. It seems that the Corey Dickerson trade to the Rays has raised a question about what the future holds for Marcel Ozuna as a part of the Marlins. The Marlins are keeping Ozuna for now (apparently), so we'll look at the Dickerson trade, compare & contrast the players performances, and see how it affects Ozuna's value for the Marlins, as they attempt to handicap the return that could be expected for him in a trade later this season.

Copollela: Braves "Ready to head to Orlando..."
The answer to that question is more a function of what we are offered than it is our desire to make more significant moves. It feels like we are ready to head to Orlando, but if somebody blows us away with an unbelievable opportunity, like with the Simmons and Miller trades, we have to consider it. I consider John Schuerholz the greatest GM of all time, and 14 straight division titles may never happen again, and those teams on average had 10 new players each season. It's like the one-liner from one of my favorite movies: "We're like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open."
First of all, points for the Boondock Saints reference, Coppy. What Braves fans can take away from this, is that the 2016 roster is pretty much set, and that the rebuilding process has now moved to the development phase. Given the "hyperinflation" (his word) in the free agent market, all indicators are pointing to the organization staying the course that they undertook in the 2014 off season, building a winner from within, with minimal help from free agency. One has to give the organization credit, they have accomplished exactly what they set out to do from day one in terms of getting the pieces in place, now they just have to pan out. That's the easy part, right?

Rockies Designate Christian Friedrich for Assignment
JANUARY 28: In light of the trade that happened Thursday sending Rockies LF Corey Dickerson to Tampa Bay, Colorado announced that they have designated lefty reliever Christian Friedrich for assignment. As MLBTR notes, Colorado acquired two 40-man players and had to clear space for one of Jake McGee or German Marquez.
Friedrich, 28, was selected 25th overall in the 2008 draft by the Rockies but has struggled much of his pro career. In 68 games in 2015, Christian went 0-4 with a 5.25 ERA and 45 strikeouts out of Colorado's 'pen. In three seasons with the Rox, Friedrich has a 5-16 record with an ERA of 5.81 and 146 strikeouts in 100 games, including 19 starts. If this does indeed spell the end for Friedrich in Colorado, it sounds like a change of scenery would be good for the southpaw.

Rockies Trade Dickerson to Tampa Bay for McGee
Dickerson, 26, has battled injuries so far in his MLB career, which has all came with the Rockies. He was drafted in the 8th round of the 2010 draft by Colorado and made his debut June 22, 2013. Last year, he slashed .304/.333/.536 with 10 HR and 31 RBI in only 65 games, missing a majority of those games due to plantar fasciitis that flared up in LA in June. He then broke a rib in August attempting to make a diving catch in St. Louis. In 265 games with Colorado, Corey owns a .299/.345/.534 slash line with 39 HR and 124 RBI.
McGee, 29, is a hard-throwing lefty that will likely slide into the setup role behind closer Adam Ottavino. In 39 games in 2015, Jake pitched to the tune of a 1-2 record with a 2.41 ERA & 48 strikeouts. He did miss some time with a left knee injury, but has been pretty durable the last 4 seasons, appearing in 252 games over that span. In his career, he has gone 21-11 with a 2.77 ERA, 319 strikeouts, and also saved 19 games in 2014.

Pitching Decisions
They've looked at a multitude of options so far, including Gallardo, Lohse, Simon, Fister, and Harang.....none of which I consider to be better than what they already have in house. I happen to like Adam Conley better than any of those, especially when you consider the cost of each.
The latest parade of pitchers to march across the stage for the Marlins includes Tim Lincecum, Cliff Lee, and possibly their old buddy Mat Latos. Lincecum is scheduling a work out during Spring Training, and the Marlins will be there to take a look. Cliff Lee is supposed to do the same, but had just recently stated that he may not be able to pitch in 2016. Hopefully, the Marlins' statement that they "will back off if there's an injury risk", will ring true.......IF one exists. I'd love to see a healthy Cliff Lee in a Marlins uniform.
They do have Justin Nicolino and Jose Urena in the minors, and they both have had a "cup of coffee" in the Bigs last year, so it's possible that they get a call after a month or two, if the other guys don't pan out.
They still could use a bullpen arm to solidify the middle innings, but the rest of the roster seems pretty well set.
There's 22 Days left before Pitchers & Catchers report to Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.......Hopefully they will have it all figured out prior to that date.
Your thoughts and comments are always welcome below.

Rockies, Charlie Blackmon Avoid Arbitration
"Chuck Nazty" slashed .287/.347/.450 with 17 HR and 58 RBI in 157 games in 2015 and swiped 43 bases along the way. Charlie had a breakout year in 2014 highlighted by an All-Star appearance, which cemented him as Colorado's everyday CF. Blackmon's name has come up in trade talks this winter (as have every one of the Rockies' OF), but it looks like LF Corey Dickerson is the one most likely to be traded out of Dickerson, Blackmon, and RF Carlos Gonzalez.

Angels Rank in 27th on USA Today Ranking.
I just finished reading USA Today Sports article
" All 30 MLB teams' starting rotations, ranked ".
The #Angels are ranked in 27th. That's BAD! This is what the article said about the Angels ranking in 27th.
" This seems bad: The Angels have, in Mike Trout, a guy who might very well prove to be one of the sport’s all-time greats, at a cost that’s a total steal given his production. But they’ll run him out behind a starting rotation that appears totally meh: Garrett Richards, their best, is pretty good, and none of the four guys slated for behind him look likely to be horrible. But front to back, the Angels’ rotation just doesn’t stack up to those of other hopeful contenders. "
Arte Moreno doesn't want to rebuild, he wants to win now. But he doesn't want to open his wallet. There's times that I feel that Arte Moreno is Al Davis of baseball. What's your thoughts for the future of the Angels this season.
