Mariners' Top Draft Pick Suffers Knee Injury

Kyle Lewis tore the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial and lateral meniscus in his right knee on a play at the plate on Tuesday.

Lewis was the Seattle Mariners' first-round draft pick in the 2016 draft, 11th overall. After a successful high school career in Snellville, Georgia, Lewis spent two years at Mercer University, refining his skills. He then moved on to the Cape Cod League where he tore through opposing pitchers, catching the eye of scouts that rated him as a first-rounder. In 30 games of A-ball with the Everett AquaSox he was hitting .299, had an OBP of .385, and a slugging percentage of .530. In 117 at-bats he totaled 8 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs, 26 runs and 26 runs batted in.

The injury occurred as he approached home plate and braced for a collision with the opposing team's catcher. He hyperextended his knee just before the collision, and stayed on the ground for several minutes afterwards. This injury commonly takes 10-12 months to return from, but varies case to case.
