Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel was placed on the 15-day DL in anticipation of the surgery Kimbrel will be having on Monday that will have him out of the lineup for 3 to 6 weeks.

After experiencing discomfort in his knee on Friday, he underwent an MRI that revealed a medial menicsus tear.

Kimbrel had been named to his first All Star Game as a result of his 17 saves and 50 strikeouts in just 33 innings this season.

He will be replaced as Boston's closer for now by Koji Uehara, the 41-year old who himself is averaging 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings, overshadowing his below-average 4.96 ERA.

It is the first time in his 7-year career that Kimbrel has been placed on the disabled list. He had registered at least 39 saves in each of his first six seasons in the league.
