Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang is under investigation by the Chicago Police Department for an alleged sexual assault incident when the team visited the Chicago Cubs for a series last month.

According to police, Kang, 29, and a woman, 23, communicated on June 17 via a dating app called "Bumble." Kang invited the woman to his hotel room, where she was given an alcoholic drink. Within 15 to 20 minutes, the woman blacked out.

She spent an undisclosed amount of time drifting in and out of consciousness. It is during this time that she claims Kang sexually assaulted her. The woman did not become fully aware of herself again until she was on her way home in a taxi. On June 19, she went to a hospital and had a rape kit done. There has been no comment on the results to this point.

Speaking on behalf of the entire organization, Pirates team president Frank Coonelly said, "We take allegations of this type extremely seriously. As a result of the ongoing police investigation, we cannot comment further at this time. We have also advised our staff and our players that they should not comment on the matter either."

Kang is in the second year of a 4-year, $11 million contract with the Pirates. Since becoming an everyday player on May 6, Kang has played in 49 games, hitting .255 with 11 home runs and 28 runs batted in.
